My Grump: Gary Glitter, from glam rock star to a pathetic paedophile
Have you ever felt so let down that you felt unable to talk about how you feel? That's how I feel about you Gary Glitter, real name Paul Gadd.
I spent my whole childhood looking up to you, singing along with you, dancing to your music, waiting impatiently for your new releases, glued to the TV everytime you came on Top of the Pops.
I bought every record you ever released, and I played them over and over again. Girlfriend after girlfriend would join in and dance along to your sounds. I even came to see you in concert several times.
And now, I'm in my fifties and still enjoy rock'n'roll. I just can't bring myself to play any of yours now you've proved to be a pathetic little paedo.
I can't believe how you've let a generation of fans down, and the damage you've done to all those minors, who were probably just as enthralled with you as I was. Just as well I had a dick wasn't it? Otherwise I'd probably have been another one of your victims.
All those times I would meet you in the clubs and bars around the South West, none of us knew anything of what was going on. All the time we shared drinks and a chat, you were getting up to your antics and abusing young girls. None of us, who thought the world of you, had any idea.
So now, not only do I feel betrayed, but I feel a bit of an idiot, that all the time I thought you were a good guy, you were being a total shit!
It seems like I grew up surrounded by peodophiles. Gary Glitter on Top of the Pops, Stuart Hall on It's a Knockout, Rolf Harris with his Cartoon Club, Wilfrid Brambell from Steptoe and Son, and Jimmy Bloody Saville on Jim'll Fix It. No wonder I'm screwed up!
And the one they all paid to spin their stories and keep them out of trouble, Max Clifford, is himself doing 8 years for indecent assault on girls and women aged 14–19. There's something very poetic about that really.
Anyway, it's all over now; Glitter could face spending the rest of his life in prison after jurors found him guilty on six counts - attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault and one of having sex with a girl under the age of 13. One more sexual predator will be off the streets. Glitter was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on 27 February.
Meanwhile, all my records will remain in a box in the attic, probably never to be played, ever again. Shame!
